HISTORY OF TROPHIES

The committee hope that the following brief description of the history of the many trophies on offer to competitors, will be of interest, and may bring back fond memories to some. Some of the details for the older trophies are brief, and the secretary would welcome further information or corrections.

SIM RAWLING TROPHY - Sim Rawling was the owner of a well known rock shop on Foreshore Rd and a keen angler. He was secretary of Scarborough Rock Anglers between the two world wars.

ALEC JACKSON TROPHY - Alec, a very successful competitor in both boat and shore events, was the son of a former mayor of Scarborough, John Jackson. He had a gunsmiths in Queen Street for many years.

SCARBOROUGH MARINELAND TROPHY - Given by local businessman Don Robinson when running the Marineland attraction on the North Bay.

SKELTON TROPHY - Donated by Clive and Terry Skelton of building firm 3P Design. Their grandfather Ted Hodgkins was a keen festival competitor.

PLAXTONS TROPHY - Given by the Scarborough coachbuilding firm.

TETLEY CHALLENGE CUP - Given by Tetleys Brewery.

W.W.HODGSON TROPHY - Bears the name of a West Yorkshire industrialist who retired to Filey and was a keen supporter of the festival.

APPLEBY TROPHY - Given by Eric Appleby, a former President, who was for many years chairman of the Festival committee.

CHARLES HORNER TROPHY - Commemorates a long time festival competitor.

W.V.SIMPSON MEMORIAL TROPHY - Bill fished both boat and shore competitions from early in the Festival history. He is described as being, in his era, possibly the finest angler in Scarborough.

MABEL MASSHEDER TROPHY - Given by Mr.Bingham, whose name is commemorated by the BINGHAM TROPHY

SUSAN MASSHEDER MEMORIAL TROPHY - Presented by her father, (a keen local angler), for the Parr competition in which his daughter used to take part.

NORTH SEA WINCHES TROPHY - Given by the founder of the firm, Mr.John Gretton who was a keen boat angler and owner of a Scarborough gun and fishing tackle shop.

DALE ELECTRIC TROPHY - Given by the Gristhorpe based generator manufacturers.

BRIGHT TROPHY - Given by the St.Nicholas Street jewellers.

SCARBOROUGH TOWNSMENS ASSOC. CHALLENGE TROPHY - The association was a group of businessmen who worked to promote the town as a resort and to extend the holiday season.

MASONIC TROPHY - Given by Jack Johnson who took competitors to sea in his boat the “Masonic”

KNIGHT TROPHY - Mr. Knight used to fish from the Masonic. When he died, his fellow crewmen gave the trophy in his name.

SALTMER MEMORIAL TROPHY - Jim was at one time, chairman of the Festival committee and also of both Scarborough rock anglers Society and South Cliff Angling Club.

STEPHEN PAUL WHITFIELD CUP - Given in memory of a young motorcyclist who died following a tragic accident.

SAM TAYLOR MEMORIAL CUP - Commemorates a keen boat angler and regular competitor.

ROCKINGHAM HOTEL TROPHY - presented by a local hotel for the junior boat angler of the week.

JOWSEY MEMORIAL CUP - Bill Jowsey was brought up, and had many friends in the old town. He served with great distinction in the RAF during the second world war. Given by his family in 1996.

SCARBOROUGH CHALLENGE CUP -Given by Mr.Walter R.Rea who was MP for Scarborough.

THE KEN WIGG TROPHY. First given by a local elder statesman.

THE ROBIN JACKSON CUP- Given by Robin Jackson of Elm Tree Antiques who was a keen Angler.

THE PEART TROPHY – Given by Mr M E Peart.

C.W.HAYTON TROPHY - Charlie Hayton, a very keen competitor, was a Malton dentist. The trophy was given by his wife and sons who were also keen anglers.

JACK BROWN TROPHY - Bears the name of a regular competitor who was for many years, a publican at Wold Newton.

PEARSON TROPHY - Given by Mr.W.H.Pearson, a keen angler and festival supporter when he was landlord of the Lord Nelson on Foreshore Road.

VICE ADMIRAL of the YORKSHIRE COAST CHALLENGE TROPHY - A very old trophy, originally presented by the Earl of Londesborough.

THE SCARBORIANS TROPHY - Given by the Scarborians Sporting Club. It replaced a very old trophy donated by Viscount Galway.

SYDNEY HERBERT CHALLENGE TROPHY - Presented between the wars by Captain Sydney Herbert. MP for Scarborough at the time.

HOSPITAL CHALLENGE BOWL - Another very old trophy. Given by Mr J.W.Drew.

JACK SMITH TROPHY - Carries the name of a local coalman who’s boat, “Coalfish”, was the first fibre glass boat in the harbour.

E.T.PEEL TROPHY - Colonel Peel used to visit Scarborough every summer between the wars in his yacht, for Tunny fishing.

BLENKIRON TROPHY - Commemorates a local painter and decorator who spent untold hours fishing from the Marine Drive.

TEANBY CHALLENGE TROPHY - An old trophy presented by Mr.Teanby.

YORKSHIRE CHALLENGE VASE - A very old trophy presented by Bertram Popplewell.

BOB YARKER TROPHY - Won by Bob, this Weatherley Cup Replica was presented to the festival on his death by his brother and sister. Bob was a master sea angler.

KEITH WILLIAMSON TROPHY - Keith was a young lad when the trophy was given to the festival by his father.

A.E.HORSLEY MEMORIAL TROPHY - In memory of Eric, a local hotelier and very keen angler who for many years fished the Festival from his boats Sally Lunn and Eleanor May.

INTREPID TROPHY - Given by the makers of Intrepid reels

PRITCHARD CUP-PRITCHARD CUP (Junior Parr) Both donated by Mr.Eddie Gardner when he owned Pritchards tackle shop in Eastborough.

BUTLIN TROPHY - Given by and named after Sir Billy Butlin of Butlins Holidays.

GORDON SHARPE TROPHY & SHARPE TROPHY - Given by and named after a former festival chairman.

DAWSON TROPHY - Commemorates Mr.&Mrs.Len Dawson who both were regular and very keen competitors.

SCARBOROUGH HOTELS ASSOCIATION SHIELD - Given by the Association.

JOHN GYTE MEMORIAL TROPHY - Commemorates a Scarborough master mariner who spent most of his home leave fishing from his boat “Taurus”

IAN K.GILES TROPHY - presented by the widow of a popular local angler.

JAMES SWEETING Snr. MEMORIAL TROPHY - Commemorates an angler who was very well known at Scarborough Mere.

ALDERMAN W.H.SMITH (MBE) TROPHY - Given by the first labour Mayor of Scarborough. He was a keen fresh water angler and for many years, President of Mere Angling Club.

FESTIVAL COMMITTEE SILVER CHALLENGE TROPHY - The Festival premier cup.

WILCOX TROPHY - Another very old trophy of which we know no history.

TERESA TEASDALE MEMORIAL TROPHY - Given by Dawn Teasdale in memory of her Grandmother.

DORIS BAYES MEMORIAL CUP- First awarded in 2002 by Mr & Mrs C Kirby in memory of their sister.

THE DAVE MEDD TROPHY-Presented by Mr & Mrs D Medd in 2003.

THE BILL BAYES MEMORIAL TROPHY – Presented by Mr Alec and Mr Peter Bayes in 2004 in memory of their father who was a top local angler in his era.

THE BARRY ROBINSON GOLD CUP-Presented by Barry Robinson for special achievement.

THE LEN MASSHEADER TROPHY-Presented by his family in memory of his dedication to angling.

THE YORKSHIRE EVENING NEWS TROPHY-Presented by The Yorkshire Evening News

THE ALONZI TROPHY-Presented by the owners of The Harbour Bar to encourage young anglers.

THE NEIL ASHINGTON MEMORIAL TROPHY-Presented by his family and friends.
